Beverage Packaging Design

What is beverage packaging design?

Beverage packaging design turns a brand into a shelf-ready container: visual identity, label, format selection and print files. At Liquid Solution, a Quebec-based studio, regulatory requirements from Health Canada and the CFIA are built into the design from day one, avoiding costly redesigns right before production.

A beautiful can that can't legally be sold is worthless. That's why our creative process and compliance work move together, from the first moodboard to the file sent to the printer.

How does a design project work with Liquid Solution?

A packaging design project at Liquid Solution follows four steps: brand positioning, visual concepts, regulatory label integration, then print files validated with the can manufacturer or label printer. Clients receive a production-ready can, not just a mockup.

  1. Branding and positioning — name, tone, visual universe, differentiation on shelf and online.
  2. Concepts and 3D mockups — multiple creative directions with realistic can or bottle renders.
  3. Regulatory label — Nutrition Facts table or Supplemented Food Facts table, bilingual ingredient list, mandatory statements.
  4. Pre-production — print templates (printed can, shrink sleeve or pressure-sensitive label), colour proofs, coordination with your co-packer.

Why build regulations into the design from the start?

Because in Canada, a beverage label is governed by the Food and Drug Regulations and enforced by the CFIA. Liquid Solution reserves space for mandatory elements in the very first mockups, so compliance never "breaks" the design at the finish line.

Elements to plan from the concept stage:

Requirement Design impact
Bilingual French-English labelling Doubles the text density to fit
Nutrition Facts table (or Supplemented Food Facts table, Division 29) Standardized block with minimum size
Supplemented food caution identifier (black-and-white front-of-pack symbol, when required) Must stay visible on the front panel
Caffeine: max 180 mg per serving for a caffeinated energy drink Cautionary statements on the back
Quebec deposit-return (RECYC-QUÉBEC): 10¢ on containers from 100 ml to 2 L Deposit marking on the label

The supplemented foods requirements (Division 29, published in July 2022) are now fully in force: the transition period ended January 1, 2026. Every new design must comply from day one.

What packaging examples has Liquid Solution produced?

Liquid Solution designed the complete packaging for three in-house brands: a caffeine-free energy drink (L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine, electrolytes); a flavour-led soda line; and a premium non-alcoholic range. Three distinct visual worlds, one regulatory standard.

  • The energy drink — a bold position: energy without caffeine. The design communicates mental clarity rather than overload, and the label showcases functional ingredients.
  • The soda line — signature flavours drive the design: each can is a character, built to stand out in photos and on shelf.
  • The non-alcoholic range — premium cues borrowed from classic cocktails, adapted to zero-proof.

How much does beverage packaging design cost?

Cost depends on the number of formats, flavours and the printing process (printed can, shrink sleeve or adhesive label). Printed cans often require high minimum orders — typical market MOQs range from 5,000 to 50,000+ units depending on the process. Design work is quoted per project — contact us for an estimate.

FAQ

Do I need a bilingual label in Canada?
Yes. Most mandatory information (common name, ingredient list, statements) must appear in both French and English across Canada, and Quebec adds its own French-language requirements. We design bilingual labels from the first mockup.

Can my energy drink contain as much caffeine as I want?
No. Health Canada caps total caffeine in a caffeinated energy drink at 180 mg per serving, with mandatory cautionary statements. That's one advantage of a caffeine-free position, like the one we took for one of our own brands.

What does Quebec's deposit-return system mean for my packaging?
Under the expanded RECYC-QUÉBEC system, ready-to-drink beverage containers from 100 ml to 2 L carry a 10¢ deposit. The rollout is staged by material: aluminum since November 2023, plastic since March 2025, and glass and multilayer cartons starting March 2027. Whichever format you choose, your label must carry the required marking and your brand must be registered with the deposit system — so it is worth settling the format early in the design.

Do you deliver final print files?
Yes. You receive templates to your printer's or can manufacturer's exact specifications, with colour proofs and a compliance check before the run.
