Connecte: A Caffeine-Free Energy Drink

Why launch a caffeine-free energy drink?

Because the energy category is saturated with products that all look alike — same caffeine ceiling, same warning labels, same crowded front panel. Connecte, a brand built by Liquid Solution, bets on caffeine-free functional energy to stand out both on the shelf and on the label.

What is the regulatory challenge for an energy drink in Canada?

A caffeinated energy drink in Canada is capped at 180 mg of caffeine per serving (Division 29, Health Canada) and must carry a standard warning advising against use by people under 14, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and people sensitive to caffeine. Above 79 mg per serving, an additional warning is required. This framework is legitimate — it protects consumers — but it also shapes the entire label design: the higher the caffeine, the more front-panel space gets taken up by mandatory warnings.

For a brand starting from scratch, that's an upstream formulation choice: work within that ceiling and warning-space requirement, or build energy a different way.

How do you formulate functional energy without caffeine?

Connecte relies on a combination of L-Theanine, L-Tyrosine, and electrolytes instead of caffeine as its energy driver. L-Theanine is an amino acid associated with a calm, focused state; L-Tyrosine is a precursor to neurotransmitters linked to alertness; electrolytes support hydration. Together, they're built to deliver mental clarity without the spike-and-crash pattern typically associated with caffeine.

The bet isn't only sensory — it's regulatory. By removing caffeine from the formula, Connecte falls outside the scope of the 180 mg/serving ceiling and its accompanying warning requirement. The concrete result: a cleaner front panel, without the warning block that visually dominates most energy cans, and a different compliance profile to document from the outset.

What did Liquid Solution deliver for Connecte?

Liquid Solution led Connecte's development from formulation to production: lab work to dial in the L-Theanine / L-Tyrosine / electrolyte combination, iterations on taste and mouthfeel, verification of Health Canada regulatory compliance specific to a caffeine-free supplemented beverage, and packaging design built to foreground mental clarity instead of the usual warning block found across the energy aisle. The file was then prepared for production, including matching with a co-packer able to handle an amino-acid-and-electrolyte formula rather than a caffeine-based one.

What does this project demonstrate for a future client?

Connecte shows that Liquid Solution can build a brand by turning a regulatory constraint into a point of differentiation, not just a box to check. The same approach — reading the regulatory framework before formulating, not after — applies to any beverage category where warning requirements or regulatory thresholds shape the consumer experience.
